Jerago con Orago - The Visconti Castle
Situated on a knoll outside the village, this castle is one of the biggest and best preserved fortresses in the area of Varese. The present structure dates back to the 12th century, but some of the frescos in the St. James's chapel might date back to the 9th-10th centuries. The cottages located on the left of the main building, which has a typical U-shaped layout, with no towers, and a wall fencing off the west side, were built around the 14th century. In the 1700's, the building was turned into a mansion house, with large windows and decorated ceilings. Two of these are attributed to Carlo Antonio Ranieri, and feature delicate bird patterns.
