Marchirolo

Marchirolo is a small town situated in the mountains south-west of Lake Ceresio, in a valley of the same name, a few kilometres from the Swiss border. In 1983, the town administration promoted a "wall painting exhibition" and invited some 15 artists to produce works on the theme of emigration through the centuries, "from the masters of Marchirolo through to today's cross-border commuters."
Among the most important works, we should mention "The Postcard from America" by Carlo Berta and Felice Filippini, which reproduces a genuine historical document, "pinned", as it ideally should be, to a wall. Other artists focused more on portraying the immigrants' families; Umberto Galliani and Giovanni Repossi painted "Waiting" (Attesa). The town centre recently acquired new works, including "Colours of mural memory", which was painted by Giorgio Polo on the facade of the Angioj Club.

The Church of San Martino

A long the painted route, dotted with old farmhouses and period villas, we recommend a visit to the church of San Martino, situated at the top of a spectacular flight of steps, overlooking the entire town. From here, a difficult path through the woods leads, in about half an hour, to the Romanesque church of St. Paul, which offers a panoramic view of Lake Ceresio.
