Lakes and sport
Varese has always greatly influenced romantic heroes, intellectuals and literati, such as Henri Beyle (Stendhal) who stood on the top of Campo dei Fiori and exclaimed: "What a magnificent sight! At sunset, you could see seven lakes."
One of the unique features of this area at the foot of the Alpine Range is its lakes, nearly all of which can be seen from the top of Campo dei Fiori, the mountain that overlooks almost the entire province.
In addition to offering views of undeniable splendour, the lakes of Varese, Comabbio and Monate, in the Verbano drainage basin, have, for decades, been ideal competition venues, where the art of rowing as a sport has gained popularity and excelled at an international level.
