The cableways

The plan for the cableway connecting the town of Varese to the mountain of Campo dei Fiori was built in the early 1900's, at the same time as the Grand Hotel Campo dei Fiori and the Restaurant Belvedere. This cableway was built after the Vellone - Sacro Monte cableway, which was inaugurated in 1909, and which started from the same station, with its distinctive octagonal shape, situated in the valley of the Vellone stream, between Sacro Monte and Campo dei Fiori, and was linked to the town of Varese, by a tramline. The original cableway was particularly interesting from a technical standpoint. It followed two bends, went through a gallery, some viaducts, and had an average slope of 49% and a maximum slope of 56%.
