From Castelnovate to Tornavento
The river Ticino provides opportunities for relaxing walks in the green parkland, amongst canals, bridges and the meandering river itself.
The river Ticino presents a series of evocative landscape scenes, along with the chance for interesting excursions on foot or by bicycle along the river and the nearby canals. One particularly interesting route is that running from Castelnovate to Tornavento.
Castelnovate is a small town at the edge of the river valley, from where you can see the banks of the river Ticino and the surrounding forests. The path runs through a series of copses, and it leads to the river bank at the Ticino's widest meander, where the fast-flowing water constantly erodes the river-bed and causes the progressive variations in its course.
Not far from here, near the Naviglio Grande canal, visitors can also see the hydroelectric power station at Tornavento, the river Ticino, the Villoresi and Vittorio Emanuele canals, and, crossing two small bridges over canals, they can reach some attractive viewpoints.
From there, you can take the ancient road Via del Gaggio that leads up to the Parco Dogana Austroungarica (Austro-Hungarian Customs Park) Centre near Tornavento, in the municipality of Lonate Pozzolo, in the southern-most part of the province.
