The Preja Buia erratic

One of the most unusual megalithic landmarks in the Province has been declared a national natural monument

The "sass da la preja buia" is one of the largest erratics in our Province, and it dates back to the Quaternary epoch, a geological period during which it was carried down the valley by glaciation, reaching its current position near Lake Maggiore.

The feature that makes it unique is the fact that in early times, it was also used as a sacrificial altar, as demonstrated by its many petroglyphs (scratched inscriptions, similar to other rock carvings with symbolic meanings).

Near the Preja Buia rock, which is at a location named San Vincenzo, there are many other erratics, two of which are very large in size and also have petroglyphic inscriptions, many of which are of symbolic significance linked to the fertility cult.

It has recently been declared a national natural monument.
