The Taino park
This large green area is just a short distance from the banks of Lake Maggiore. It is a setting in which modern art and nature blend to create evocative effects of shadow, while also offering superb views over the lake.
The Taino public park is the location of the interesting and unusual "place of the four cardinal points", a very original monument created in the early 1990s by artist Giò Pomodoro. This work is distinctive for its massive pieces of white, grey and pink rock and granite pilasters, which were sculpted and positioned in the park according to a carefully designed scheme. In fact they form a series of fascinating shadows, particularly impressive in the period of the summer solstice.
Apart from these more technical features, this monument is notable for its unusual construction and its considerable complexity of meaning. The work contains a rife of symbolic references linked to the world of male and female figures, fertility, the cyclic character of life, and nature.
The large public park also offers a breathtaking view over the nearby town of Angera, and the southern part of Lake Maggiore, with the majestic slopes of Monte Rosa rising up in the background.
