The Lavena strait

Italy and Switzerland are separated by just a few metres of water in this charming section of the lake, in a splendid natural setting with a wealth of plant life and shaded beauty-spots.

This enchanting natural canal is a few hundred metres long, and it separates Lavena Ponte Tresa from Caslano by just 20-30 metres. It offers relaxing lakeside walks, an ideal way in which to appreciate the natural green setting. In addition, at weekends and in the summer season, the strait is also popular with sports anglers, because this section of Lake Lugano has a thriving population of fish including pike, perch, pearl roach and chub.

It is also well worth visiting the Torrazza kilns, built in 1913 and now an important episode of industrial archaeology, preserving the memory of a local industrial activity that has been long abandoned. This plant is in fact one of the last of its types to have been built in Europe. The strait can be admired from above by reaching one of the viewpoints in Marzio. From here, the panorama includes the Agno valley, Mount Ceneri, and the superb backdrop of the Ticino Alps.
