Lake Varese
Lake Varese, in a superb geographical position, lies at the foot of the Campo dei Fiori ridge, and it is 8.8 km long and 4.5 km wide. There are fine views of the lake already from the first section of the Varese-Milan motorway, with a wide, luxuriantly green basin providing a setting for the lake, with many villas and villages whose character makes them a fine match for the landscape.
The Campo dei Fiori ridge slopes gently down to the lake, while the Alps, dominated by the majestic profile of Monte Rosa, provide a splendid backdrop. On the west bank of the lake is the small islet named Virginia, where the remains of one of the most important pile-dwelling villages in Europe can be seen.
