The bay of Corgeno

A little-known area provides many environmental, natural and historic features of interest. The aquatic plant blossom, and the fact that many bird species typical of a marshland habitat nest here, make these areas particularly interesting in spring.

The southern shores of Lake Comabbio, known as the bay of Corgeno, is a natural area where many bird species, and particularly ducks, come to nest. This lake also has a thriving fish population, consisting primarily of pike, Po brook lamprey, pearl roach, carp and tench.

The village of Corgeno gives visitors the chance to take a nature walk named 'Percorso Acqua', Water Route, running along the shores of the lake, and into the surrounding reed beds, also crossing a beach with various tourist services, and one of the most important rowing centres of the district.

Corgeno is also the location of much of the marshland area named "Mercallo marshes", where the presence of ancient populations of Celtic origin, named "Corogennates", has been documented.

In this area, where the lake becomes increasingly marshy, some traces of pile-dwellings have been found, the only ones to have been discovered on Lake Comabbio and which, together with the analogous findings in the nearby Lake Varese, represent one of the most important archaeological systems in the world. The discovery of these prehistoric settlements dates back to the late 19th century, a period in which the archaeology craze led to the discovery of many sites in the Varese area.
