The Pinewood Park

Leisure, culture and relaxation... in the heart of an Arcadian habitat.

The Parco Pineta (Pinewood Park) offers many opportunities for people who like hiking and BMX cycling: many paths run through this green area, not far from the valley formed by the river Olona.

A plainland forest that has long been an integral part of the local environment, with many human activities, such as forestry, agriculture and social aggregation, in a symbiotic relation with nature: this is a summary of the environmental resources and the range of activities conducted in the Park. Many species of plants and animals have settled here, such as the honey buzzard which arrives from Africa in spring, the northern goshawk which has recolonized the area after a break of hundreds of years, the crested tit, a guest from the mountains, the crested newt in the marshpools, and the red squirrel, living high up in the trees.

The forest comprises predominantly the scots pine, with colours that enhance the landscape, and the pedunculate oak, a fundamental species in the forest's structure. In the shade, pale violet periwinkles and dandelions embroider a colourful tapestry on the forest floor.

The forests in the Park, covering 3,500 hectares of the total 4,800 hectares of the Park, represent an important example of the original forests that once covered the Po valley plain. They form a green peninsula, a forested salient extending into the densely urbanized areas of the plains.

The Park is an important link in the Lombard ecological network in which managers, employees and volunteers attempt, day after day, to weave a complex human and natural tapestry capable of conserving and improving the habitat, the primary resource for ensuring man's future.
