Ticino Valley Regional Park

The Ticino Park comprises 46 municipalities in the provinces of Varese, Pavia and Milan. As the crow flies, the river park is over 100 kilometres long (from Sesto Calende to Mezzanino); the banks have a total length of over 280 kilometres, and the population living in the area is about half a million.

The overall area exceeds 90,000 hectares, and this sizeable area includes five different zones:

- the valley formed by the river, and the respective habitats
- the plainlands distinctive for their high water table
- the Castanese plain, for which the Villoresi Canal provides irrigation
- the plain north of the Villoresi canal (Gallarate and the heathland area)
- the lowest sections of the moraine hills in the Varese area
