Nature reserves and parks

Our province is considered as the "Green Province" because of its landscape heritage, which extends from lakes to mountains in an area that, notwithstanding the considerable number of towns and the intensity of human activities, has remained relatively intact from the ecological point of view.

Even though the Province of Varese has one of the highest population densities in Italy (683.2 people/km2), the area still has a wealth of landscape resources, considering the extent and diversification of its ecological network. The province has a series of protected areas comprising a wide range of ecosystems (marshes, mountains, rivers, forests, lakes) which make up about 34% of the total land area. These zones are part of the "Nature 2000" European ecological network, and one of them, the Brabbia marsh, is part of the short list (just 50 locations for the whole of Italy) of marshland of international significance, a list compiled in compliance with the Ramsar Convention.
