The Brinzio erratic

This important and predominantly forested habitat includes some natural monuments that are well worth exploring.

This giant rock is one of the most significant natural monuments in the Campo dei Fiori park. This and other large rocks can be seen at a height of about 750 metres. They were transported and deposited here by glaciers running down what is now the Intrino valley, on the north side of the Campo dei Fiori range.

This erratic, consisting of gneiss (a metamorphic rock rich in quartz), along with other similar rocks that can be seen in the province, is a feature of an important geological phenomenon that took place about 60,000 years ago. Over the course of successive glaciations, detritus from the glaciers in the Simplon and Gotthard regions was carried down the valley, in a process that can be compared to a series of massive landslides. The detritus included these enormous rocks which can still be seen in this area.
