The Valcuvia mountains
This area offers a lovely verdant green habitat, with areas of beech forests, meadows and orchids, on a substrate of limestone rock giving rise to interesting features of Carse geography.
The SCI (site of community interest) named "Monti della Valcuvia", the Valcuvia mountains, covers about 1,600 hectares, ranging from 200 to 1,235 metres altitude. This protected natural environment includes distinctive habitats in this area, part of the central subalpine district of Lake Maggiore, such as small beech forests, in which there are also limes and maples above all on the green slopes of Monte Nudo, and forests of downy oak, present above all on the sunnier slopes of the Sasso del Ferro massif.
In addition, the Valbuseggia area, in the location named Vararo, presents areas of meadowland in which a number of rare flower species can be found, such as orchids, amongst shallow peat beds and scree slopes.
This peaceful setting offers many opportunities for leisure activities and relaxation, such as walks of varying difficulty. Such excursions may include sightings of the characteristic local fauna, including the Black Woodpecker, a number of birds of prey, and freshwater shrimps.
The limestone formations of the area are particularly important: they are similar to those of Monte San Martino nearby.
