Monte Nudo

This mountain, one of the major subalpine summits of the area, offers an uncontaminated and evocative setting, and it is a favourite location for paragliding and hang gliding.

Monte Nudo is one of the most important subalpine mountains in the Province. It can be reached by taking the road up from the Cuvignone pass, from the Cai Adamoli mountain refuge, or from Casalzuigno.

From the Cuvignone, a mule track leads up to the peak named Crocione, running through an uncontaminated and evocative woodland environment. It is an ideal itinerary for mid-height mountain walking, and the peak is also a launch site used by many paraglider and hang glider pilots.

After a few minutes' walk, the track enters a dense, shadowy pine-forest, and then continues towards Pian Pozze at about a thousand metres altitude, where it becomes narrower and steeper. The walker can follow a route up to viewpoints looking out over the village of Vararo, and then continue up to the summit, with its breathtaking view extending from Lake Maggiore to Valcuvia, and, further northwards, towards the town of Luino.

Visitors should not miss the small church of San Martino, and the steel cross erected on the summit of Monte Nudo. This cross is unusual for the fact that it was installed without the use of helicopters or other means of material transportation.
